Kansas Bans K2 and Other Herbal Incense Blends
Gov. Mark Parkinson signed a bill into law that bans several of the ingredients found in a variety of incense blends. This is what happens when lawmakers jump the gun.
They fail to consider that there are many products can be abused by individuals that are determined to get a buzz. Unfortunately, law makers fail to realize that the majority of incense users do not want to get high. Most people who burn incense do so properly as a way to fill their homes with an appealing aroma.
As we discontinue shipping Pandora Potpourri to Kansas, we must ask ourselves if the government is jumping the gun on this one.
Our company has proposed a number of ideas to lawmakers as an alternative to adding incense to the list of controlled substances.
Here are a few ways to discourage abuse of products like K2 and Pandora:
Require labeling of all ingredients, both natural and synthetic.
Most herbal incense manufacturers do not label ingredients at all or label only natural ingredients. Labeling ingredients would help to break the common misconception that herbal incense products are completely natural.
Restrict the sale of the product to adults.
The sale of many products with abuse potential such as spray paint and fireworks is permitted only to adults. By restricting the product to responsible adult users the likelihood of abuse is significantly lowered.
Provide appropriate warning labels.
When the herbal incense industry discovered that it’s products were being directly inhaled as an alternative to illegal substances, manufacturers responded by labeling the products as not for human consumption. We encourage the addition of appropriate research-based warnings.
Add bitterants to discourage abuse.
Bitterants have successfully discouraged the accidental consumption of dangerous products such as antifreeze and wiper fluid as well as the intentional abuse of inhalents such as gas dusters.
Pandora is leading the industry in product safety and education.
- We actively discourage the abuse of our products.
- Pandora labels all of it’s product as not for human consumption.
- Pandora instructs retailers to restrict the product sales to adults
- Pandora supplies ingredient lists to all of it’s wholesalers and retailers.
- Pandora complies with local laws by not shipping to restricted areas.
Our products are to be used only as incense.
Tennessee and Missouri are always very close to a ban. I believe Kentucky outlawed it as well.
